Job Requirements/Description

We're on a journey to build the bank of the future, and we need your help! We're looking for experienced Senior Android Engineers (mobile engineer) to join our team. If you’re a self- motivated Senior Android Engineer and highly proficient in Android mobile development, then this is the role for you!

Our digital platforms (public website, mobile & tablet app, and internet banking website) are where the majority of customer and colleague interactions with the bank take place. They are becoming increasingly sophisticated with the introduction of public API's, growing numbers of devices to access them from and evolving operating systems.

We’re passionate about our shared passion for delivering new features for customers across our brands in the mobile space. The Retail Lab mobile teams are part of the Retail Transformation directorate and are fully agile teams that strive for excellence.

Joining our team, you’ll have opportunities to participate in internal Hackathons, coding challenges and bi-weekly platform meetings and be a member of a great engineering community passionate about sharing knowledge and learning.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Development:

  • Design, implement, and maintain core Android libraries, frameworks, and tools used across the company’s Android applications.
  • Development of scalable, reliable, and efficient code that enables the platform to evolve and support new features.

Platform Optimization & Performance:

  • Analyse and optimize performance for the Android platform to ensure low memory usage, high responsiveness, and smooth user experiences.
  • Conduct rigorous code and design reviews, ensuring high standards in terms of code quality, maintainability, and performance.

Tooling & Infrastructure:

  • Build and maintain internal tooling, libraries, and components that improve developer productivity and application quality.
  • Work with CI/CD pipelines to streamline testing, debugging, and deployment processes, ensuring fast and reliable releases.

Research & Innovation:

  • Stay current with the latest Android SDK, tools, and industry trends; evaluate and integrate new technologies as appropriate to enhance the platform.
  • Experiment with and promote innovative solutions to improve user experience and overall app quality on Android devices.

What you’ll need

We believe that people don't fit neatly into roles, and we value everyone's individual skills, experience, and knowledge - it's what makes you amazing!

  • Platform Expertise: Strong experience with Android frameworks, multi-module architecture, dependency injection (e.g., Dagger/Hilt), and asynchronous programming (e.g., Coroutines).
  • Performance Optimization: Proven track record in performance tuning, memory management, and debugging for Android applications at scale.
  • Architecture & Design: Solid grasp of architecture patterns (MVVM/MVI, Clean Architecture) and modularization strategies for large codebases.
  • Collaboration Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members across different departments.
  • Version Control: Proficiency with Git, GitHub/GitLab.
  • Testing Practices: Experience in unit testing, UI testing, and familiarity with testing frameworks like JUnit, Espresso, and Robolectric.

Just so you know, we will be asking you to complete a technical task during the interview process. We hope you find it fun, interesting and challenging.

We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:

  • A generous pension contribution of up to 15%
  • An annual performance-related bonus
  • Share schemes including free shares.
  • Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping.
  • Generous holiday allowance, with bank holidays on top
  • A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies

Working pattern: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week currently, or 40% of our time, at our office locations noted above.
